My name's Courtney Durr, but you can call me Courts.
Body Love NZ started gradually, inspired through small moments, intuition, and courage. I didn't just get to a point where I was like, "YOU KNOW WHAT!! I LOVE MY BODY AND WHO I AM, AND SO I THINK WOMEN NEED TO REALISE THEIR WORTH AND LOVE THEIR BODIES TOO. I'M GONNA START A FULL TIME BUSINESS AND CHANGE THE WORLD". It was more of a slow progression, small steps, as I learned about mental and physical wellbeing myself and as I learnt what was missing, where the issue lay, and how I could possibly help.
I'm a personal trainer by trade. I lived and breathed fitness and sport growing up so naturally moved into working in a gym. At the start of my career about 5 years ago, I was young, naive, and easily influenced. I followed suit of all PTs in the industry, promising results, fitness, weight loss, and of course, toning. I watched my colleagues closely. I watched how they trained, how they looked, how they spoke, and I imitated. As I grew closer to my clients, who were predominantly female, I always felt not quite good enough. I felt like my skill level and knowledge was lacking and I felt lost because of how often I would hear my clients speak about how they weren't feeling satisfied with their progress or themselves.
Through self-reflection, talking with others about my insecurities around my knowledge, and through videos like Embrace, I noticed the pattern and the problem. The problem wasn't with my knowledge or with these women's bodies, it was with their thoughts about them and what society was portraying as a "one size fits all" look of beauty and health. When in reality, health and beauty comes in all shapes, colours, and ages.
From 2015 I made some bold decisions to go against what most PTs in the industry was doing. I stopped weighing clients and focused more on the goals they were achieving, I stopped speaking so much about the body and more about the mind and soul. I stopped making them feel guilty for not sticking to their diet or exercise regime and focused more on their sleep, stress, and happiness levels.
It was at this point that I decided to build Body Love NZ, my own little community. A community with values of compassion, courage, and connection. A community that measured success not by how much weight they dropped but by how much confidence they gained. It was an environment that allowed women to feel vulnerable and supported, where they could share their struggles and not be judged. This community grew, as did my love for it, and my passion to be immersed solely in the fitness industry grew less important, so I made the brave and bold decision to go out on my own and expand BLNZ.
Fast forward 2 years and it has been the wildest and best ride of my life. I've watched friendships blossom, goals be obliterated, limits removed, and I can't wait to see what the future holds.
